APPEARANCE; Dragons are large, flying creatures that are unique among every other animal seen in Arlezar. Where every other vertebrate has four limbs, a dragon has six. The mere fact that they can breathe fire is proof enough to humans that a higher being created dragons. For that reason alone, neither humans nor Shariya have attempted to domesticate dragons.
An adult male dragon can be up to ten feet tall, with a wingspan of eighty feet or more. Females tend to be slightly smaller, around eight feet tall, with smaller heads and shorter tails than males. They have long, wedge shaped heads with protruding horns protecting the end of the spine and base of the neck. The colour of their tough leather-like skin varies, and they have been seen in almost every natural colour. Their overall build is similar to a greyhound – long and lean. The width and depth of the ribcage adds even more to that appearance, though it hides a dragon’s greatest weapon.
In proportion to the body, the legs are strong limbs ending in long, curved talons similar to that of a raptor, making the dragon a fast runner on land with extreme acceleration. By nature, dragons are sprinters – they cannot maintain their fastest speed for more than a few minutes, which makes flight their primary hunting tool. Most dragons' wings have white, opaque membranes that are considered it's greatest weakness, for a dragon that cannot fly is a dead dragon.
ABILITIES; Shifting is not an innate ability for dragons, it must be learned.
A steady supply of food to digest, which creates a mixture of hydrogen and methane in the stomach, is crucial to flight. The hydrogen collects in a second pair of lungs with a capacity of up to sixty cubic feet and, combined with an empty stomach and honeycomb bones, provides the required lift for flight. When mixed with a catalyst in the form of platinum, this same gas gives the ability to breathe fire.
Vocally, dragons can usually be heard whistling, and many have developed mimicry. Grunting, roaring and screeching are also common, though a dragon can make almost any sound imaginable by manipulating the flow of hydrogen in the throat.
HABITATS;
LIFE CYCLE; Most of the time, dragons are nomadic. They'll wander over all of Arlezar - showing up anywhere they can find food, and often angering villages whose flocks have become a lunchtime snack. Dragons are extremely territorial, so outside of an Astiran Summer, there are likely to be confrontations between dragons. Their most common prey are wild game and livestock, though it's not uncommon for a dragon to make a feast of a village if it can. The beginning of an Astiran Summer marks the dragon migration, all mature dragons returning to the desert to mate. The females will arrive first and find a cave - either claiming an existing cave or digging out another. They will scratch at the walls, sometimes for weeks, to dislodge enough debris to block the entrance to the cave while they wait for the males to arrive.
Males are drawn to the desert both by instinct and the females' whistling. There are many fights, some of them interrupted or caused by dragon hunters. Once the males have fought for and won their chosen females, they will leave them alone to deal with eggs. For some unknown reason, the surviving male dragons will always fly north to the Black Lands together before dispersing once again. The females will also leave, after laying their eggs and blocking the cave entrance with debris scraped from the walls. If, however, a female does not mate - if her male is killed by hunters, for example - she will remain in her cave and eventually starve to death.
The gender ratio of dragons can fluctuate greatly, depending on the weather. Warmer temperatures will encourage the eggs to hatch male, while cold weather will result in more females. If an egg becomes too cold, it will lay dormant until the required temperatures for development are achieved, but it will not die unless the egg is destroyed. When the eggs do hatch, approximately a month after being laid, the hatchlings will eat the eggshells, which are constructed primarily of whatever catalyst the female has been eating, and begin breathing fire to dry their wings. In a typical clutch of twenty eggs, only five can be expected to survive beyond their first year. The hatchlings will break down the wall set by the mother and eventually break out into the desert heat to their new lives. Young dragons, unlike their parents, will often stay with their clutchmates for several years before going their separate ways.
Dragons reach sexual maturity at the age of 14, though they will wait another seven years before mating. Juvenile dragons are an exemption to the migration, as any who venture near the desert during an Astiran Summer will be killed by the older males, if they're lucky enough to escape the hunters. Provided they survive this long, it will take another 14 years for a dragon to reach their full size. When it comes to the shifting power, there is no set timeline, though it is worth noting that no dragon younger than 100 years old has learned to shift without guidance from another hunter, though they
In regards to predators, dragons have none outside their own species, except the odd human luck-blessed enough to strike a fatal blow. The few dragons who have mastered the shifting power unique to the species, aside from being sworn to take the secret to the grave, have taken it upon themselves to control the dragon population. They fear seeing another massacre of dragons, or seeing them eradicated entirely, but they also admit that some dragons must be sacrificed for the greater good. Aside from being difficult to kill, dragons are immortal in terms of aging. They may die of a disease or be killed by a hunter, but barring any fatal wounds, a dragon will most likely outlive the world.
POPULATION; Dragons are considered to be wild monsters that eat children who don't wash behind their ears, and that's exactly what most of them are.
DRAGON HUNTERS;
A dragon hunter is, firstly, a dragon. Those referred to as dragon hunters have mastered their human form and the shape-shifting power that allows it, and they find employ as dragon hunters. It's a rather practical arrangement - while humans can and do kill dragons, it is extremely difficult because they know next to nothing about them. A dragon hunter, however, knows every intimate detail of a dragon's life and habits - they know their weaknesses, and more specifically, where to strike. Among humans, aside from being regarded as insanely dangerous and a task best left to professionals. The Astiran Summer is the busiest time for dragon hunters, who, while they might be employed to slay the odd nuisance dragon, are usually forgotten for the seven years between. There are two main hunts during the Summer, the Grandsire Hunt and the Hatching Hunt.
A dragon hunter's weapon is known as a Call Sword. They are forged in dragon fire and magic, a spell specifically designed to kill what created it. Because dragons have no ability to use magic beyond shifting between a human and dragon form, the creation of these swords often involves kidnapping or tricking a mage into casting the spell over the blade while a dragon hunter in dragon form fires the blade for the smith. The origin of the name Call Sword is the hilt whistle that mimics a female dragon's mating call. To use the whistle, simply remove it from the hilt and spin it around on a string above your head.
From the time of their first shift, their human appearance is defined. The shape of the face, height, the major details, are all locked in place. Minor details, however, can be changed from shift to shift. For example, the human form might have long hair at one shift, and short hair for the next. Hair colour, eye colour and even weight/build to a certain extent can all change from shift to shift. They cannot change any details while in human form though, and any wounds, marks or scars will remain for the dragon's lifetime. This includes wounds gained in dragom form - in human form they would be in a comparative location. Wounds on the wings or tail will appear anywhere along the spine, in proportion to their location on a dragon (a cut to the wing would be on the shoulder, for example).
